Twinkle Khanna’s production venture, PadMan has a relevant social message, good performances and a dialogue starter for mainstream cinema that by and large shirks from discussing problems. However, Padman is a flawed piece of cinema.

We are horribly confused about what a good film entails – what are we looking for, after all? Entertainment surely but monetarily, the film’s numbers establishes its success. Though I am no trade expert but I am pretty sure that here is a hit. What is heartening is that the hit has many facets to it – it has a relevant social message, good performances, and a dialogue starter for mainstream cinema that by and large shirks from discussing problems. However, Padman is a flawed piece of cinema. It’s a documentary, at best, on Arunachalam Muruganantham and since the award-winning Al Jazeera documentary has stayed on my mind, I didn’t need the film to show me a certain Mr. Lakshmi Prasad to know what this Superman has achieved in life. But I am a stray example. Clearly, the world needs this biopic and so it was made with fervor. You wish it had more of its producer’s wit. I couldn’t get over the fact that the film is so low on fun. There can be enjoyable ways to take up an uncomfortable topic and you’d assume that someone like R Balki, whose films prove otherwise, would know how that’s done. But alas, this proves to be Balki’s weakest work till date. After a series of yawn-worthy scenes in its fractured first half, you realize that the film’s writing is its real villain. That’s such a shame because, at its core, this is a brilliant story to tell. But like they say, not all good stories make good films.

The film has some breakthrough scenes though. The one in which Akshay stains his trousers, unsure of what to do next is a favorite. Akshay Kumar brings his experience in exposing his vulnerability and embarrassment beautifully on screen. I could spot women around getting a high from seeing a man (a superstar in this case) empathetically putting himself through things customary for them.  But it is Radhika Apte who steals your heart with a genuine performance. Never hitting a false note, she takes on the docility of her character with precision. I felt hapless that the writers gave Sonam Kapoor so little to work with. Neerja proved her as a sturdy performer who is capable of so much more.  I believe she did the movie because of her personal love for the cause at the heart of it but the film doesn’t do any justice to her caliber. But probably her character was the most thought-provoking element all along. Balki botches that up with a frivolous love angle. It’s high time people understand that women can be more than objects of romantic interest. Talking about empowerment, that’d be a great start!

The film could’ve been so much more if it wasn’t for an underwhelming first half. The story takes eons to set up its canvas and though the next hour is near perfect, climaxing in a euphoric scene, you never get over its bumpy start. I laud the idea of this film, I am a fan of Arunachalam Muruganantham who deserves more than a mere biopic. But I can’t get over the feeling that a woman should have written this film or directed it. Probably, the palette and milieu would have conveyed more of what a woman feels about menstruation. Despite all of the tall speeches and great intentions behind the film, this is far from the great cinema. And it’s my strong belief, a woman at the helm could’ve done it better!

We rate it a judicious 60%. Watch it regardless. Period!
