Sports movies in India instil the patriotic side in all of us. With Chak De India and Dangal as primary examples and Reema Kagti cleverly uses her movie Gold to do just that. The film doesn’t take time to give out a message as to why it chose independence Day as it’s release date. 10 minutes to the film and it is crystal clear. The feeling you get when you see the Hockey Team under British India paying ode to the British National Anthem, it is a deafening silence sort of atmosphere and shows you the troubled times before an Independent India.

Akshay Kumar plays the patriotic alcoholic manager Tapas Das whose personal problems don’t defy his national levels goals in any way. In the first half, the actor plays the Bengali accent and eccentricities with finesse. Mouni makes her debut with Gold and is the firecracking sassy wife of Tapan who is also like a nagging mother to him. Mouni owns every frame she is in and the chemistry between Akshay and her is seamless. Vineet Kumar Singh as Imtiaz and Amit Sadh as Raghubir are perfectly cast for their roles and the scenes where Hockey is being played are very well shot. The interval leaves you at a place which will make you skip the popcorn line and get on with the movie already. Here’s hoping the second half is filled with more hockey action on the field.

Gold is directed by Reema Kagti and produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani under their home banner Excel Entertainment. The film marks Mouni Roy‘s Bollywood debut and also stars Kunal Kapoor, Amit Sadh, Vineet Singh, Sunny Kaushal and Nikita Dutta in pivotal roles. The film is based on India’s historic win at Olympics where we bagged a gold medal for Hockey post our Independence. This iconic moment took place in the year 1948.
