There is a small section of society (increasing every Friday) that is heavily invested in movies that make them think. On the other hand, there is the majority of the audience who go to the theatres for pure entertainment, irrespective of the plot. Satyameva Jayate falls into the lap of the latter crowd. Satyameva Jayate’s director and writer Milap Milan Zaveri had one intention with this movie and that was to take the ‘kalank’ off his repertoire of sex comedies.

Satyameva Jayate focuses on Virendra Kumar Singh (John Abraham) who is a maseeha for the innocent and takes law into his own hands. Veer punishes the corrupt police officers in a brutal fashion, similar to the crimes they commit in the power of law. The damper in his plans is DCP Shivansh, who is a part of the law and amongst the minority of good cops. What follows is a back and forth between the two and just like how all the character’s views on Veer’s intentions keep fluctuating, so will yours while watching the film.

The storyline is too basic but Milap Zaveri cleverly uses John Abraham and submerges into his core strength with the mantra – action speaks louder than words. One negative point to add is that the length time of the movie was too stretched and at times, you just wanted the scene to get over and done with. In the case of the cinematography, it felt like an ode to a classic South-style action film with extreme close-ups and dolly shots with the dramatic background music to add to the effect. John Abraham tearing open a car wheel with his bare hands and dodging almost a hundred bullets is like candy for action movie fans.

Say what you want about him, but John is the star of this masala action entertainer. His earnest performance and raw culture even gives Manoj Bajpayee a run for his money, and that is saying something. John is a mixture of Salman Khan, Sunny Deol, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone who let their body language do the talking leaving aside their acting skills. Manoj plays the tough cop with a heart of gold to a t but somehow it still feels overly repetitive now. Aisha Sharma makes her debut with this movie but is again just a wasted love interest who adds another unneeded twist to the story.

A special mention to the song Dilbar which takes us back to the classic item numbers we are known to love. The other songs could have been avoided and more action sequences could have been infused instead.

Overall, Satyameva Jayate is not about a social message. Instead, it will fulfil the guilty pleasures of those who love pure action masala entertainers. Watch it as a no-brainer or else the movie is not your cup of tea.

We rate it a 45% on the movie meter.
